The story of the name, from the sources
In Lisan al-Arab, al-wateen is a vessel in the heart: if it is cut, its owner dies. Ibn Faris says the root means to stay and hold on: waa-tin water is water that never runs dry.

The word appears in the Quran, in Surah al-Haqqah. Ibn Abbas, as al-Bukhari reports, said al-wateen is the cord the heart hangs from.
﴿ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ الْوَتِينَ﴾
Surah al-Haqqah 69:46
Ibn ‘Abbas: al-wateen is “the cord the heart hangs from”

Ibn Manzur quotes a sharper description from Ibn Sida: a vessel along the spine, that waters all the vessels with blood: the river of the body. It resembles what anatomy now calls the descending aorta, which runs along the spine.

In poetry, there is a strange story. Araba of Medina was generous to the poet al-Shammakh, and the poet told his camel: when you have carried me to Araba, then bleed from your wateen. When the caliph Abd al-Malik heard it, he said: a poor reward! She carried his saddle and brought him there, and he repaid her with slaughter. Narrators recalled the words of the Prophet, peace be upon him, to a woman who vowed to slaughter his camel that had saved her: Glory be to God, what a poor reward you gave her.
«إذا بلَّغتِني وحملتِ رحلي ‧ عَرابةَ فاشرَقي بدمِ الوتين»
al-Shammakh to his camel: “bring me to ‘Araba, then bleed from your wateen”
Caliph ‘Abd al-Malik: “a poor reward!”
The Prophet ﷺ: “Glory be to God, what a poor reward you gave her”
